Racking Standards & Compliance
Understanding AS 4084:2023 Requirements
The Australian Standard AS 4084:2023 sets the benchmark for steel storage racking in Australia. It outlines the design, installation, operation, and maintenance requirements for pallet racking systems used across various industries. Compliance is not optional – it's a legal requirement.
What You Need to Know
What is AS 4084:2023?
AS 4084:2023 is the current Australian Standard for steel storage racking. It specifies requirements for the design, installation, and maintenance of pallet racking systems to ensure safety in the workplace. The standard applies to adjustable pallet racking, cantilever racking, and other types of steel storage systems.
Inspection Frequency
Under Section 8 of AS 4084:2023, inspections of steel storage racking must be carried out at least once every twelve months by a competent person. However, high-traffic areas or operations with heavy machinery may require more frequent inspections to maintain safety.
What Gets Inspected?
Our comprehensive inspections examine all critical components of your racking system including upright frames, beams, braces, connectors, and floor fixings. We check for damage, corrosion, overloading, improper modifications, and compliance with Safe Working Load (SWL) ratings.
What Our Inspections Cover
Structural Elements
- •Upright frames for damage or corrosion
- •Horizontal beams and connectors
- •Bracing and diagonal supports
- •Floor fixings and baseplates
Safety Features
- •Column guards and frame protectors
- •Beam safety clips and locks
- •Load signs and SWL ratings
- •Aisle markings and clearance
Load Assessment
- •Current load vs rated capacity
- •Load distribution and placement
- •Overloading identification
- •Product overhang assessment
Documentation
- •Photographic evidence of damage
- •Red/Orange/Green classification
- •Specific recommendations
- •Compliance certification

RED - Critical
⚠️ Immediate Replacement Required
Structural integrity compromised. Does not meet AS 4084:2023 standards. Area must be isolated and component replaced immediately.
- • Severed uprights or beams
- • Significant dents (>5mm)
- • Missing or broken connectors

ORANGE - Warning
✓ Passes Acceptability - Monitor Internally
Moderate dents, twisting, or worn/loose connectors. Still within AS 4084:2023 standards but requires regular internal inspection and monitoring.
- • Moderate dents (2-5mm)
- • Slight twisting of uprights
- • Worn or loose connectors

⏱️ No Action Required
Continue regular annual inspections. Monitor during routine checks. Normal wear within tolerance.
- • Minor surface scratches
- • Small dents (<2mm)
- • Cosmetic wear only
